About Canadian Income Tax

Canada has a progressive tax system, meaning that you pay a higher percentage of tax on higher portions of your income. Both the federal government and provincial/territorial governments impose income taxes.

The basic personal amount is a non-refundable tax credit that can be claimed by all individuals. This amount is the threshold below which income is not taxed.

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions are tax-deductible, reducing your taxable income for the year. The annual RRSP contribution limit is 18% of your previous year's earned income, up to a maximum amount ($30,780 for 2023).

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) premiums are mandatory contributions for most Canadian workers. Self-employed individuals must pay both the employer and employee portions of CPP/QPP but are exempt from EI premiums.
